How do I do a federal trademark search?

Answered By Elsie Ivins, Editor

There are two vital information that you need to obtain before doing a federal trademark search. In most cases, federal trademark attorneys required this information before performing a qualified search.

1. The description of the mark which includes the design and the font used in the text content of the trademark.

2. The type of products or services that will be promoted or sold under the mark.

You can do federal trademark search by logging in to the USPTO website and accessing the Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) to search for trademarks registered in the country.

In case your mark has a design element, you will have to do a federal trademark search by using a design code. You can also perform the search to the nearest Patent and Trademark Depository Library (PTDL) in your area. It is a library designated by the USPTO to receive and store copies of patent and trademark materials and making it available to the public.
