What can and cannot be patented?
Answered By Elsie Ivins, Editor
According to the law, any individual who “invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, or any composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement, may obtain a patent” although it is subject to specified conditions and requirements. This includes practically everything that is man-made and the process for making such products.
Laws of nature, physical phenomenon, and abstract ideas cannot be patented. This includes the following:
• Copyrights,
• Tradenames, logos, titles,
• Business scheme, and
• Mathematical techniques.
