What is the life of a patent?
Answered By Elsie Ivins, Editor
Utility and plant patent life are usually lasts for 20 years from the date the application was filed on the PTO. In order to maintain the patent for that time frame, you must make timely payments. For design patents, it lasts 14 years from the date of the grant. Unlike in utility and plant patents, design patents do not require maintenance fees.
