How much does it cost to get a patent?

Answered By Elsie Ivins, Editor

The cost is quite high, although the fees for the patent application, issuance, maintenance fees, and other related charges are reduced by 50 percent if you are a small entrepreneur or a single inventor. In this case, expect to pay a minimum of $4,000 to the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the life of the patent.

The filing fee is estimated to be from $400 to $1,000 or even more depending on the number of claims in the application. If you hire a patent agent or a patent attorney, expect that you will pay the hours that they have worked taking care of your patent application.

If you will be filing a patent outside the United States, the fees are varying from one country to another. For instance, if you will be filing in Canada, it may cost you $1,000. In Japan, which requires translation, it might cost you around $10,000. In addition, the patent attorneys in that particular location also imposes different billing rates, which can make your patent application either low or high cost.
